Nevada was the 36th state to be admitted into the Union on Monday, October 31, 1864.

Nevada covers 110,567 square miles with a population of 2,414,807 people.  Nevada is the 7th largest state and the 35th most populous.  Boundary Peak is the highest point in Nevada at 13,140 feet above sea level.  The name Nevada is a Spanish word for "snowcapped"

Nevada's name was adopted in 1861 when territory was established. The name was derived from the Spanish language, meaning "snow-capped".

The state's nickname is Silver State, due to the large number of silver deposits that were discovered and mined there. "Sagebrush State" and "Battle Born State" are its alternative nicknames.

Lake Tahoe, Reno, and Las Vegas are major resorts. Recreation areas include Pyramid Lake and Lake Tahoe, and Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, both in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Other attractions are Hoover Dam, Virginia City, and Great Basin National Park (includes Lehman Caves).
