Florida covers 58,560 square miles with a population of 15,982,378 people. Located in the panhandle is Britton Hill the highest point in Florida at 345 feet above sea level. There are off-beat and old-fashioned towns to explore where you can still savor a slice of life from by gone days. This region is also home to the largest collection of natural springs in the world, amazing sunsets, wonderfully quiet recreational rivers and trails, and world-class flora and fauna.

Much of the state of Florida is situated on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. Its geography is marked by a coastline, by the omnipresence of water and the threat of hurricanes. Florida has the longest coastline in the contiguous Unites States, encompassing approximately 1,350 miles.

Florida actually means "full (or feast) of flowers" named by explorer Ponce de Leon  because of all the flowers he saw when he landed here in 1513.  Florida's semi-tropical climate allows it to have year-round flowers and lush vegetation."The Sunshine State" is Florida's official state nickname because of the many sunny days in Florida. It was adopted by the 1970 Legislature.

Florida's economy rests on a solid base of tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. Leading the manufacturing sector are electrical equipment and electronics, printing and publishing, transportation equipment, food processing, and machinery. Oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits lead Florida's agricultural products list, followed by potatoes, melons, strawberries, sugar cane, peanuts, dairy products, and cattle

Florida's bordering states are Georgia and Alabama and the bordering bodies of water is the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The largest river is the St. Johns at 273 miles and the largest lake is Lake Okeechobee at 700 square miles (2nd largest in the U.S.). Florida's coastline is 1,197 statute miles.Florida Keys

State sales tax 6%, corporate tax 5.5%, no state income tax. There are 20 major commercial airports and 12 international airports. Florida has 1,250+ golf courses more than any other state.

A few points of interest are Walt Disney World, Epcot center, NASA Kennedy Space Center, Everglades National Park, Busch Gardens, Key West, Daytona Beach and Universal Studios Florida.

When it comes to Florida's Space Coast, Kennedy Space Center (KSC), the region's top-billed attraction, is hardly the final frontier. It's a must-see, though, especially if you haven't been there recently and experienced the new Shuttle Launch Experience, an attraction that simulates launch and space flight. And as far as once-in-a-lifetime experiences go, witnessing a real shuttle lift-off from the Center definitely goes to the head of the "do before you die" list.

And then, of course, there are the beaches – the other obvious reason to visit, especially if, like my family, you travel to surf. Cocoa Beach upholds the coastline's gnarly reputation because the Cocoa Beach Pier attracts the hang-ten crowd.
