The town of Riverton lies within the Wind River Indian Reservation and is the hub city for Fremont County, Wyoming. Riverton's route along the Yellowstone Highway has made it a favorite stop-over for visitors to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. No matter what your favorite outdoor activity is, Riverton and the surrounding area have it! Fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, boating, golf, snowmobiling, skiing and just plain old relaxing are available within minutes of Riverton.
Riverton is located within, but separate from, the Wind River Indian Reservation. Riverton is the commercial and lodging hub of Wind River Country. Riverton was founded to take advantage of the area's plentiful agricultural resources. The discovery of oil, natural gas, uranium, and other mineral wealth has added another element to our local economy. Finally, with Wyoming's greatest concentration of high-technology manufacturing jobs, Riverton's economy is as diverse as the cultures and backgrounds of its residents.
The Riverton area abounds with culturally and historically significant sites and activities, ranging from pre-historic rock art to Indian missions to pow-wows and dance exhibitions. In addition to regional pow-wows, weekly Indian dance exhibitions are held in Riverton's City Park on Thursday evenings from May through August.
Riverton is home to the annual 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous. Held each year during the first week of July, on the site of the original 1838 Rendezvous, this event features a weeklong re-creation of the trappers and traders encampment, games of skills, food, dancing, and entertainment.
The Riverton Rendezvous is another sort of festival. This weeklong event during the second and third weeks of July, celebrates Riverton's founding in 1906. With the region's first and most popular hot-air balloon rally, street dances, the Rocky Mountain Car and Bike Show, and a WRA rodeo, this event draws visitors from across the country.
Riverton hosts the Fremont County Fair during the first week of August. The Fair draws visitors with big-name Western entertainment, Fremont County's only PRCA Rodeo traditional livestock, craft and commercial exhibits; and a carnival midway.
