Since our incorporation in 1993, Burien, a 100-year-old community with a rich heritage, has been busy defining and redesigning itself as a vibrant King County city. Our citizens see the City of Burien as a friendly community with well-established neighborhoods and a small-town atmosphere.
Burien is a relatively undiscovered waterfront gem of the Seattle area: lower prices than the neighborhoods just to the north yet still a very easy 20 minute drive intodowntown Seattle. The neighborhoods of Three Tree Point, Seahurst, Crescent Beach, and Shorewood are quiet and well established, with many people discovering its virtues and living here for many decades. The coastline is gorgeous, and the residential waterfront streets are peaceful with very little traffic. Contrary to many people's perceptions, the location of Burien's coastline due west of the airport actually makes it the quietest coastline in the entire Seattle area (flight paths are only north-south, meaning that the planes are actually on the ground due west of Burien). The local government also supports the waterfront through its famous Seahurst Park and new Eagle Landing Park, plus recognizes and supports the value of its peaceful waterfront neighborhoods.
Downtown Burien offers full local services, department and discount stores, a great variety of locally owned specialty shops, a wide variety of restaurants, and “Olde Burien’s" quaint shops. Highline Community Hospital is a fixture of the area. The huge Southcenter Mall and surrounding stores are just 15 minutes east, in the valley at Tukwila.
The Burien Library is a fine example of King County's expansive library facilities. Other local organizations include the Burien Arts Gallery, the Performing Arts Center, Burien Little Theater, Seahurst Workshop Gallery, Highline Historical Society, the Community Computer Center (to assist local citizens with computer skills). Many people are involved in the support of hospitals and other service or charitable organizations, and they actively participate in local government, schools, and children’s athletics.
Seahurst Park offers wooded trails, sunny beaches, picnic shelters, and quiet benches to enjoy the ever-changing views of glistening mountains, brilliant sunsets, islands, sailboat races, power craft, ferries, tugboats, and huge cargo vessels. Other nearby recreational sites offer ball diamonds, recreation community centers, skateboard park, miles of paved trails along the Green river, pocket parks scattered throughout the town, and the brand new Eagle Landing Park complete with eagle's nest and a nature trail.
Burien is served by the Highline School District and is home to Highline High School and Sylvester Middle School in addition to several elementary schools.
It is also the home of many Catholic schools, including John F. Kennedy Memorial High School, St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School, and St. Bernadette Elementary School.
