The discovery of gold, silver, copper and lead in nearby canyons contributed to the industrialization of Murray. Over the next several decades, sixteen smokestacks dotted the Murray skyline. The smelters employed thousands of people, many of whom arrived here from south and central Europe. Many of these early settlers built dugouts for their homes until a log cabin or adobe structure could be built. Christian Berger was one of those early settlers. He helped many foreign emigrants settle in an area which was called Bergertown.
