San Angelo, the county seat of Tom Green County, is on U.S. highways 87, 67 and 277, State highways 208 and 126, Farm roads 584, 765, 1223, 388, and 853, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, 220 miles northwest of San Antonio, in the center of the county near the geographical center of the state.

San Angelo State Park is also significant, encompasses four ecological zones (Hill Country, Rolling Plains, High Plains and Trans-Peco) and 50 miles of trails in its 7,563 acres. The park is also notable for bird and wildlife watching.

Goodfellow Air Force Base is located in San Angelo, TX and is home to the Seventeenth Training Wing, a training facility of the United States Air Force subordinate to Air Education & Training Command (AETC). The main mission of Goodfellow AFB is to develop and administer training in cryptology and general intelligence career fields for Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy personnel as well as students from other Allied countries and national organizations.
