Its original name was Chapin, but Mr. Chapin was tried for murdering a man in San Antonio's Buckhorn Saloon. Propriety demanded a name change, and so John Young, prominent businessman, named it after his birthplace of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1911. Somewhere along the way, the "h" was dropped.
El Sal del Rey (Salt of The King), a large salt lake is located 22 miles north of Edinburg, and was discovered by the Spanish Conquistadors. Salt from the mines was transported overseas to Spain and her colonies and westward into Mexico.
