Albany sits in the heart of western Oregon’s Willamette River valley, on the banks of the Willamette and its tributary, the Calapooia River. From its river town beginnings, Albany has grown south and east with the railroads, state highways and Interstate 5, and across the Willamette into the farms and wooded hillsides of North Albany.
Albany is credited by historians and architects with having the most varied collection of historic buildings in Oregon. This collection includes styles from the 1840s through the late 1920s and is concentrated in an area of about 100 square blocks. Four historic districts are listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.
With over 700 historic buildings, from museums to antique shops and from "painted ladies" to craftsman-style bungalows, visiting Albany is an experience rich in pioneer history and charm.
Albany is known as the rare metals capitol of the world. Several local industries produce zirconium, hafnium, and titanium. Wood products, food processing, and manufactured homes production are major employers also.
Living in the present... looking to the future... honoring the past. Albany, now an important manufacturing center for the rare metals, food processing, timber and seed industries, has never forgotten its Victorian days - its beginning as a thriving and prosperous river town. When Highway 99 and I-5 were constructed, Albany's older commercial and residential areas were bypassed, and now Albany is home to Oregon's largest group of past architectural styles, including every major style popular in the U.S. since 1850. The Monteith, Hackleman and Downtown Commercial Historic Districts have 350 historic homes. Visitors to Albany may tour many of the city's historic homes during the Summer Interiors Homes Tour, conducted annually on the last Saturday in July or during the Christmas Parlour Tour, held in December. Included are tours of museums, historic churches, homes, haywagon rides, refreshments and trolley rides.
