Fairborn, Ohio

 

Fairborn is a city in Greene County, Ohio, near Dayton and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It claims to be the only city in the world with the name of Fairborn, a portmanteau word created from the names Fairfield and Osborn; the two villages that merged in 1950 after theFairborn, Ohio Great Dayton Flood of 1913 forced Osborn to move out of a flood plain and alongside Fairfield.

Fairborn actually enjoys a unique place in early American history, as the Wright brothers were known to perform some early testing of aircrafts in Huffman Prairie. Fairborn was the original home to the United States Air Force Museum, now currently located in Dayton.

When coming to visit the Fairborn area, a visit to the United State Air Force Museum is a must! Boasting galleries filled with aircrafts from the days of the Wright Brothers all the way to modern day spacecraft, the museum is truly a display of technology at its greatest. Be sure to plan an entire day for this visit, but don't worry, parking and admission is free!

Looking for quality entertainment in the Fairborn area is not that difficult. The Nutter Center is home to the professional sports arena as well serving for a popular concert venue for main line artists. The Monster Truck rallies are also a common venue for the Nutter Center in addition to various expo's.

Fairborn boasts high quality education for the cities students. Five elementary schools, one junior high school and one high school provide state of the art education for the next generation. The faculty and staff work together to provide educational opportunities to help students develop skills necessary for lifelong earning in our diverse culture. The FACTS program is a separate curriculum geared to meet the needs of more talented students. There are also private schools providing an educational alternative, located right within Fairborn.

Wright State University is situated in nearby Dayton and offers quality education in both undergraduate and graduate levels, providing study in areas of liberal arts, science, medicine, and business to list just a few. W.S.U. serves more than 16,000 students, and links to area businesses, and research organizations offering unique educational opportunities.

The City of Fairborn has a special commitment to recreational areas. The Parks & Recreation Division maintains 686.57 acres of park land consisting of 18 parks, a nature reserve, a historical home, and the Wright Brothers Huffman Prairie Bikeway.

Take a stroll on the paved walking path at Community Park, let the kids play until their hearts content on one of our many playgrounds, or take a hike on a nature trail.  Explore the heirloom gardens at the Mercer Smith House which are considered Ohio's best.
