Kannapolis, North Carolina

 

Kannapolis is a city in Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Rowan counties northwest of Concord and northeast of Charlotte. The community was named for the Cannon Mills

Kannapolis history dates back into the early 1900's as this small rural town became known for its textile production.  A century later the world economic picture has changed and so has Kannapolis. 

Dale Earnhardt was a legend of American auto racing, nicknamed "The Intimidator" for his competitive instincts and hard-driving style. Competing in the NASCAR racing league, Earnhardt had 76 career wins and won the Winston Cup championship seven times; as NASCAR grew in popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, Earnhardt became one of America's most popular athletes. His sons Kerry and Dale Jr. followed him into racing. After years of success in other races, Earnhardt Sr. finally won the famed Daytona 500 in 1998. Three years later he was killed in a crash on the final lap of the same race.

This old Textile Mill Town underwent a dramatic chjange in July 2003 when the Pillowtex Textile plant closed.  The Kannaoplis Real Estate area suffered a heart rendering loss but change was on the way!

In December of 2004, California billionaire David Murdock won the bid for the Kannapolis plant and the Kannapolis NC Real Estate transformation is underway.  The new Bio-Tech Research park is an outstanding addition to Homes in Kannapolis NC.  The Research Park is a joint venture between Dole Foods, Duke University and the University of North Carolina system. 

Kannapolis has three school systems within its jurisdiction. There are also numerous colleges and universities within two hours of the city. Kannapolis also has many attractions, sites and events and is centrally located to even more throughout the Charlotte-metro region.

Safrit Park offers the only lighted soccer field in Cabarrus County, a greenway, playground and two baseball fields. The Village Park amphitheater, the largest amphitheater in Cabarrus County, was the site of the first 2004 Coca Cola Summer Concert Series. Attendance at the summer concert series surpassed 22,000 people from across the Charlotte-region. The award-winning Summer Concert Series will expand to seven shows in 2005.
