Charlotte was founded around 1700 as a village on the Catawba Indian trade route. When gold was found around 1800, people from everywhere around came to North Carolina and many mines sprang up, and gold speculation boomed. This lasted for about 50 years. These days Charlotte, named for the wife of King George III of England, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, is the largest city of the state of North Carolina, and the third tallest banking center of the United States. The city has almost 600,000 inhabitants, and is home to quite a few distinctive high-rises, including one of the United States tallest, the Bank of America Corporate Center.
