Alamogordo is a city in Otero County, New Mexico.The city name is a Spanish word meaning "fat cottonwood ". It is the county seat of Otero county. Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range are two major military bases located near Alamogordo.
Alamogordo is the southeastern New Mexico gateway to the Land of Enchantment. A town that both locals and New Mexicans alike refer to as "Alamo" is located just sixty miles from Las Cruces NM, an hour and a half drive time north of El Paso, TX and less than an hour's drive from the mountian resort towns of Cloudcroft and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Our town has a full calender of events and lots of civic pride.
Alamogordo boasts many fun and interesting thing to do. The Alameda Zoo is the oldest zoo in the southwest. The nearly century old Toy Train Depot has a wonderful museum and gift shop as well as long train rides in beautiful Alameda Park. Our town is just 15 miles from White Sands National Monument one of New Mexico's natural wonders. Another must see is Oliver Lee State Park, a little south of town which was the site of historic battles between the US Army and the area Apache tribes. The New Mexico Space Museum and IMAX theater are also "Don't Miss" experiences. Each year Alamogordo hosts a Hot Air Balloon Festival and the community's Fourth of July celebration rates as tops in the region.
World's Largest Pistachio Sculpture Giant pistachio nut, 30 ft. high, on Hwy 54 between Alamogordo and Tularosa NM. Sculpture built by Bar M Construction contains 5 yards of concrete and is covered by about 35 gallons of paint. Anchored by thick concrete 4-ft in diameter and 9 ft down.
