North Platte, Nebraska

 

North Platte is a city in Lincoln County. It is the county seat. The community was named for its location on the North Platte River.

North Platte was the hometown for none other then Buffalo Bill, also known as William F. Cody. Although not everyone walks around in a big white cowboy carrying a rifle, the presence of this frontier legend is definitely alive and well in North Platte. Visit the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and see his amazing Victorian home and barn. The barn is now the stage for items kept from the legendary Wild West Show.

Fort Cody is Nebraska’s largest souvenir store. You’ll know you’ve arrived by the enormous Buffalo Bill figure out front. Inside you’ll see a fantastic selection of Minnetonka Moccasins, gold, t-shirts and a whole lot more. Continuing with the Buffalo Bill theme, the Cody Park attractions make it worth visiting. Inside you’ll find a life-size statue of Buffalo Bill, the Wild West Memorial and the very cool Railroad Museum.

One of the attractions not linked to Buffalo Bill is the Lincoln County Historical Museum, which includes the World War II Canteen display. The volunteers that made up this canteen ensured that each military train received food and hospitality. That meant they were on duty for 51 straight months, 24 hours each day. Quite impressive.

Glenn Miller, born Alton Glen Miller, once lived in North Platte.  

North Platte is home to Bailey Yard, owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad, it is considered the largest classification yard in the world.  The Union Pacific Railroad with the efforts of many other supporters are in the process of building a new visitor's center, The Golden Spike.

During World War II, North Platte was a welcome stop for more than 6 million service men and women whose troop trains were greeted at the North Platte Canteen.

North Platte is home to a  monument dedicated to all 20th Century Veterans from all branches of service.
