Eagan is a city in Dakota County, Missesota, and is a thriving suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area located approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Minneapolis.
Eagan is the home of Northwest Airlines and is located near the Mall of America. Just south of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Eagan offers the Midwest's largest municipal water park at Cascade Bay, horseback riding at Diamond T Ranch and art and flower gardens at Scherer Gardens and Caponi Art Park.
Adjacent to the Minnesota River Valley Wildlife Refuge, Eagan's rolling hills and scenic beauty provide a respite from the activities in Minneapolis and the Capital City of St. Paul. Events include the Yankee Doodle Arts & Crafts Festival, 4th of July Funfest and heritage Lone Oak Days in September. A new Community Center will be completed in 2003 with banquet space, a band shell and trails to explore at any of St. Cloud State University's athletic games.
The first residents of the Eagan area were the Dakota or Sioux Indians. Around 1740, a small settlement known as Black Dog Village was formed along the Minnesota River, near the present Burnsville/Eagan border. The Sioux had been driven from their traditional homeland near the Mille Lacs Lake in North Central Minnesota and were attracted to the Eagan location by nearby trading posts.
