Johnson Niles, the first settler, originally named the village Hastings in 1822. Later it was renamed Troy Corners, then finally Troy because many of the early settlers had come from Troy, New York.Troy, Michigan

Today, the city of Troy is a suburb of Metropolitan Detroit. It is located in the southeastern portion of Oakland County. The city is also the location of a large number of office centers. Troy is the home of automotive corporations and numerous financial companies. The city features the impressive Somerset Mall.

The International Academy of Design and Technology and Walsh College are located in Troy. Branches of several colleges are located in Troy including the University of Phoenix, ITT Technical Institute, Central Michigan University and Spring Harbor University. The Management Education Center of Michigan State University can also be found in Troy.

The city has been recognized for its outstanding school system. The schools in Troy have a high graduation rate as well as an excellent record regarding the percentage of students that go on to attend college.

Troy is home to the Oakland-Troy Airport which is a general aviation airport often utilized by business people and tourists flying charter planes.

The Troy Historical Museum is popular with visitors and was designed to display the various stages of the history of Troy. The museum features ten historic structures. Visitors are allowed to enter the buildings and view the historic decorations that fill the structures that include a school house from the 18th century, a blacksmith's shop, a general store, a church and the home of the pastor and a log and mud structure.

The Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center is a nature sanctuary containing about 100 acres. The focus of the sanctuary is to educate people about the world of nature. The center is a beautiful area for visitors to enjoy and the center features numerous school programs to educate kids about nature.
