Saginaw is the county seat of Saginaw County. The city is served by MBS International Airport, which is located in Freeland, a central point for two other nearby cities, Midland and Bay City. The city is adjacent to Saginaw Charter Township. Saginaw is located approximately 100 miles north of Detroit, at the northern end of Michigan's industrial corridor and near the gateway to the State's recreational areas.
Saginaw was established in 1816 as a fur-trading post by Louis Campau. In 1822 it became "Fort Saginaw," under the leadership of Colonel David Standard, the first postmaster. In the 1850's, several cities were developed, including Saginaw City, East Saginaw and Saginaw West Side. In 1889, the 3 cities were consolidated during the lumber boom. It soon became known as a major shipping port on the Great Lakes.
Today Saginaw continues its reputation as a significant shipping center for farm products and sugar processing. A major player in the auto industry, it is a major contributor to the steady growth of the Tri-Cities metropolitan area, (along with Midland and Bay City). Saginaw is also known for its architectural heritage, featuring several turn-of-the-century style churches, a unique Gothic-like water treatment plant and most prominently, the " Castle," Saginaw's first post office, now a historical museum. The west side features "Old Saginaw," several blocks of well-preserved Victorian style buildings containing unique shops and restaurants, a great place for a night out on the town.
The Riverfront provides almost constant relaxation opportunities year-round whether cruising up and down the river on a warm summer day, fishing from the banks or the new pier near Court Street, walking along the Saginaw Riverwalk, watching fireworks over Ojibway Island, or Ice Fishing in the Annual Shiver on the River.
