Chelmsford is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in the Greater Boston area. It is located 24 miles from Boston and, bordering on the City of Lowell, it is part of the Greater Lowell metropolitan area. Besides Lowell, Chelmsford is surrounded by five towns; Billerica, Westford, Carlisle, Tyngsborough, and Tewksbury.

Chelmsford began as a community of agriculture and grazing, with dairying and orchards as specialties. There was some lumbering, and a series of small operations such as gristmills, lime quarries, and brick yards.
