North Chicago is located in Lake County, one of the fastest growing counties in the greater Chicago area. North Chicago is bordered on the north by Waukegan, the county seat. North Chicago serves as corporate headquarters to the world renowned pharmaceutical company, Abbott Laboratories and is the site for other well known manufacturing firms such as the Coleman Industrial Park, Gillette, Stone Container and Goelitz Confectionery, home of the "Jelly Belly" beans that at one time satisfied the sweet tooth of former President Ronald Reagan!

The city is also home to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, which houses the Chicago Medical School and the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.

Many more smaller industries and businesses are actively operating within the city. The Great Lakes Naval Training Center lies within the southeast corner of the city, and is adjacent to Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School.

A short distance from the city are two major shopping centers. Gurnee Mills Mall the largest indoor outlet mall in the U.S. is about 10 miles of North Chicago, and Hawthorne Center Mall in Vernon Hills is also a short driving distance from North Chicago. Six Flags Great America, an amusement park across the street from Gurnee Mills Mall, is a popular and fun place to spend the day in the summer months.
