Macon is one of Georgia's three Fall Line Cities, along with Augusta and Columbus. The Fall Line is where the hilly lands of the Piedmont plateau meet the flat terrain of the coastal plain. As such, Macon has a varied landscape of rolling hills on the north side and flat plains on the south. The fall line causes rivers in the area to decline rapidly towards sea level, making it an ideal location for textile mills in the past. The Ocmulgee River is the major river that runs through Macon.

Downtown Macon offers a unique shopping experience. The history found in the buildings and architecture offer a beautiful backdrop. Nearby Robins Air Force Base in neighboring Houston County is the area's largest employer, supplying jobs to some 25,000. Geico, a large insurance company headquartered in Macon, employs 4,000. Long established in Macon, YKK, a Japanese zipper factory, employs more than 700. Macon Medical Center employs another 5,000. The employment base is diverse and deep.

Primary and secondary education in Macon is enriched by magnet schools. Five of the total 31 elementary schools are magnet schools, devoted to specialized academic fields. From Pre-K through high school, the student-teacher ratio is about 16-1. Central High School offers the International Baccalaureate Program and is a Fine Arts magnet school. So it's possible for a child growing up in Macon to start in pre-K and finish a law or medical degree in the same town.

Mercer University is located in historic Macon, Georgia- a welcoming community of small-town values with big city amenities just one hour south of Atlanta. Macon is the cultural, educational and medical hub of central Georgia.

Approximately 2,300 traditional undergraduates attend Mercer on the Macon campus. Forty-five states and 69 countries are represented among the entire student body.

Mercer offers more than 60 majors, an impressive choice of minors and concentrations and a broad spectrum of courses and degrees in undergraduate education.
