The main campus of the University of West Florida is situated north of the city center.
Pensacola is nicknamed "The City of Five Flags" due to the five governments that have flown flags over it during its history: the flags of Spain (Castile), France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Other nicknames include "World's Whitest Beaches" (due to the white sand prevalent along beaches in the Florida panhandle), "Cradle of Naval Aviation", "Western Gate to the Sunshine State", "America's First Settlement", "Emerald Coastt", "Redneck Riviera", and "Red Snapper Capital of the World."
We invite you to scuba dive the world’s largest artificial reef, fly a simulated jet at one of the world's best aviation museums and fish from one of the longest piers in the Gulf of Mexico. Come and see what our area has to offer.
Pensacola, best known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation”, has trained aviators for every major conflict during the 20th century. Annually, 40,000 enlisted and officer students begin their initial training in the Pensacola Bay Area. The military is the largest economic engine in the greater Pensacola area.
Fresh water bass fishing, deer season, big bill fishing, snorkeling near sunken freighters or old sailing ships lost to hurricanes of the 1800’s, tons of arts & crafts festivals year around, IMAX theatres where you fly with the Blue Angels. You can have it all when you visit and fall in love with this magnificent city by the Gulf of Mexico.
Pensacola is also known as the Cradle of Naval Aviation. Amongst our citizens of nearly 400,000 in Escambia County alone, many of our neighbors are either active military, students, teachers or retired. Most aviators’ careers began in our wide variety of aviation schools and specialty courses. We have now acquired additional branches of the military other than just the Navy with the closure of other bases around the country.
New Orleans is 3 hours to the west, Atlanta is 5 ½ hours to the Northeast, Disney World is 8 hours away – that’s close enough for a weekend. With the every growing expansion of the airport right in the heart of the mall area, everything is accessible.
