Longmont is the 13th most populous city in the State of Colorado. The word "Longmont" comes from Longs Peak, a prominent mountain named for explorer Stephen H. Long that is clearly visible from Longmont, and "mont" from the French word for mountain.

The city is named after Long's Peak, which is prevalent on the western horizon.

Longmont Colorado was founded in 1870 as a hub for farming activities. Large irrigation ditches brought then and still bring water from the rivers to the rich farmland soil. The Great Western Sugar factory, which manufactured sugar from sugar beets until the 1970's, still hovers near Old Town today as a monument to the past.
