Camarillo, California

Located in Ventura County California, the city of Camarillo straddles the 101 freeway about 50 miles Northwest of Los Angeles and 40 miles South of Santa Barbara in a coastal valley 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean at Point Mugu. In a semi-rural setting, the surrounding Camarillo, Californiafarmland is some of the most productive to be found anywhere, yielding up to three crops per year.

Camarillo is in a wonderful setting on the Pacific coastal plain, surrounded by picturesque mountains and hills and highly productive agricultural land.

Two of the area's major employers are Harbor Freight Tools and Technicolor Video Services. Camarillo has a General Plan which works to preserve the unique quality of life in Camarillo. There is a wide variety of housing choices in the area with something for everyone. A city of rolling hills, strawberry fields and orchards, Camarillo is still very much an agricultural town and that is part of its charm. Residents describe it as "unspoiled". The city provides many recreational opportunities to help residents enjoy their environment. There are summer camps and sports camps, golf courses and athletic leagues, all enjoyed in the area's mild, Mediterranean climate.

The Chumash Indians were the first known settlers in what is now known as Ventura County where, as fishermen, they built their villages along the Pacific Coast near the mouths of the Calleguas Creek and Santa Clara River. Artifacts from their settlements are on display in the Ventura County Historical Museum and their painting are still visible on canyon walls and in caves in the area.

With 14 schools for grades K-8 (including two intermediate schools), Pleasant Valley School District (PVSD) has the largest enrollment. PVSD also operates three alternative schools for those who desire a non-traditional or more structured educational environment for their children. Four of PVSD's schools have received state or national recognition for academic excellence. Oxnard Union High School District has jurisdiction over the two local high schools, Adolfo Camarillo and Rio Mesa. Seventeen private schools are also located in the greater Camarillo area. Camarillo high school students' Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores have ranked consistently among the highest in Ventura County.

Weather

Camarillo and the surrounding Ventura County area is fortunate to have what is probably the most temperate and livable climate on the North American Continent. Its location in a coastal valley brings mild ocean breezes and temperatures in the 70's throughout most of the year. An average rainfall of 13 inches occurs mainly from November to February and the city enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year with an average humidity of 62%. The climate is frequently likened to that of the Mediterranean.

Snow has only fallen here about 3 times in the last thirty years and is never more than a sprinkle and melts within the hour. Snow is often visible during the winter months above the 4000 foot level in the mountains to the north of the city. The proximity to the ocean results in some foggy mornings in spring and early summer but this usually burns off by noon.
