The economy of Apache Junction is based almost exclusively on recreation and retirement. Most commercial services in the area cater to tourists and recreation seekers on their way to Arizona's central lakes and forests. Apache Junction's main scenic attractions are the Superstition Mountains, which are reputed to be the site of the Lost Dutchman Mine. Many people are still challenged by the thought of discovering the Lost Mine and search the mountains for its location. The name of the mountains, of which Superstition Peak at 5,057 feet is the highest, can be attributed to the legends and stories of the nearby Pima Indians.

Apache Junction is the gateway to the Tonto National Forest, the Superstition Wilderness, the Apache Trail, and the Salt River Chain of Lakes. It has long been a popular destination of winter visitors because of its mild winter climate and attracts as many as 40,000 winter visitors and retirees annually. Much of its commercial services in the area cater to tourists, retired people and recreation seekers on their way to Arizona's lakes and forests.

 

There are a range of community amenities including a library, senior center, community swimming pool, community events center, and nine park sites. A 1,600-acre municipal multi-use park stretches along the city's northern and eastern boundaries and provides opportunities for horseback riding, and hiking. The Lost Dutchman State Park is another popular 320-acre site with the Superstition Mountains offering hiking, camping, picnicking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails.
